12/18/2006 - Jaguars and Arvada Battle to a 1-1 Tie

In a game between the 1st and 2nd place team that featured 45 minutes of fast aggressive hard fought hockey, the Jaguars had to settle for a tie with their CCYHL rivals from Arvada, and they liked it as well as a father who receives ties every year for Father’s Day. They wanted a win to avenge their only league loss just two short weeks ago and to separate themselves from Arvada but a late goal by Arvada tied the score at 1-1 and negated what would have been the narrowest of victories.

With Jimmy Maier sitting out due to the sprained ankle suffered in the game against the Thunderbird Bantam AAA team at the Air Force Academy, Taylor’s broken arm still on the mend and Dan Turgeon and Nick Sutton still slowed by injuries, the Jags started the game skating fast and controlling the puck but neither team was able to get many shots on goal. Hyland took their first penalty at 12:18 of the first period, but killed that penalty off easily and went on the power play with a little more than 8 minutes left in the first period. The boys were able to control the puck in the offensive zone, but only managed one shot. Number 67 on Arvada was penalized less than a minute into the power play for throwing the puck in disgust after a whistle, but because it was the 10-minute misconduct variety, it did not result in a 2-man advantage. Arvada was able to kill off the balance of the 5 on 4 power play.

Dustin got the best chance of the period when he used his familiar speed to create a breakaway chance with 4 ½ minutes left, but his shot rang off the crossbar to the relief of the Arvada netminder. The Jags went back on the power play at 2:40 of the first period when number 50 from Arvada was whistled for hooking. That power play ended 25 seconds when the Jags committed the first of two consecutive penalties leading to an Arvada had a 4 on 3 advantage with 1:27 to go that soon turned into a 5 on 3 advantage. The aggressive PK unit didn’t give Arvada a chance to set up their power play and when they did get a shot, there were no holes in Michael Barber’s defense. The period ended with Hyland having a 6 to 3 advantage in shots on goal and 33 seconds left to kill off their last penalty. Each team was penalized 3 times which left very little time for 5 on 5 hockey.

With an extra man on the ice, Arvada was able to pick up their pace at the start of the second period and carried the momentum for most of the period. Michael stepped up his game and was there to meet the challenge. Trevor had the best Hyland chance with about 5 minutes into the period when Dan Turgeon was able to head man the puck to Trevor at the blue line, but the Arvada goalie made a great save and sent the puck out of the zone. Both teams took turns visiting the penalty box, 4 for Arvada and 3 for Hyland.

The Jaguars got on the boards first during one of the rare times of even strength skating. Brent started the play with a crushing hip check in front of the Arvada bench as #26 was crossing the blue line. Luc jumped on the loose puck in the defensive zone and hit Dan Turgeon in the neutral zone with a tape to tape pass and create a breakaway chance. “Fish” was able to skate in and snipe a shot in the top right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead with 2:47 left in the period. The goal seemed to energize the Jags and they were able to put three straight shots on net, but the Arvada goalie was able to scramble to make amazing saves on each of the shots. With the sustained pressure, the Jags were able to draw a penalty with 69 ticks left on the clock. The Jaguar power play nearly doubled the lead, but a last second shot was gloved and squeezed to end the period. Arvada now held a 15 to 13 edge in shots on goal and a 7 to 6 edge in penalties, but Hyland had the important 1 goal lead with 15 minutes to play after a break for the flooding of the ice.

Even though the Jags started the third period on a power play, the first five minutes looked like a carbon copy of the second stanza. Arvada was able to get the first 6 shots on goal without a reply from Hyland. Dan Sheehan and Luc turned the momentum around with a 2 on 1 break starting at center ice. The lone Arvada defender chose to attack Dan and hit him before he was able to pass to Luc but tripped him as the puck rolled harmlessly to the Arvada goalie. Number 50 from Arvada was called for hooking 10 second into the resulting power play and left the Jags with 1:50 of 5 on 3 to get that precious insurance goal. Hyland was able to control the puck in the offensive zone get some shots on goal, but failed to get any quality scoring chances.

It was now Hyland’s turn to take consecutive penalties overlapping by one second starting at 7:47 left in the game. After killing off nearly 4 minutes of Arvada power play, number 5 was able to tie the score with spinning backhand shot that traveled 10 feet on the ice through 3 sticks, 6 skates and under a surprised goalie with 3:49 left in the game and only 1 second left in our penalty. Coach Brian called a timeout to calm the team and inspire the boys to finish the last four minutes of the game strong.

The Jags dominated the next three minutes of the game keeping the puck in the offensive zone the entire remaining time getting 5 shots on goal. Depending heavily on their goalie, Arvada finally cleared the puck and dumped the puck for a much needed change. The Jags took one last roughing penalty with less than a minute left in the game and the puck trapped in the skates next to the boards in our defensive zone. Arvada took this opportunity to call their timeout and set up their power play.

If Arvada thought Hyland was going to sit back and passively kill off this penalty, they were wrong. Winning the face off, the Jags flipped the puck to Dan Turgeon crossing the red line and he was off to the races. Unable to catch Dan, 54 from Arvada was forced to hook Dan from behind to prevent him from setting up the goaltender like he did near the end of the second period. The penalty was called but no penalty shot was awarded and the game was finished with four skaters from each team. Arvada ended up outshooting the Jags 23 to 20 with each team taking 10 penalties.

Overall it was a good weekend with two wins and tie to rebound from a 1-1-1 record and an early exit from the Silver Stick Tournament last weekend. They end the 2006 portion of the season with a 17-5-2 overall record, an 8-1-2 league record and alone in first place with a 2 point lead in the CCYHL standings.

For the boys on both the Major AA team and our team not playing for the Standley Lake High School team, there will be a game against the Thunderbird Midget Minor 91 AAA team this coming Thursday, 12/21 at 6:15 on the Green Rink. After that, the boys will have a two week break and return to League action against DU on January 7 at 1:45 PM in Magness Arena.

With wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year and a much deserved rest, let’s hope that Santa brings some healthy bones, tendons and ligaments so the Jaguars can get back to full strength for the 2nd half of the season.

12/17/2006 - Jaguars Take 4-1 Victory Over Thunderbirds

The Jaguars continued to get their game back on track with a 4-1 win over the Thunderbirds U14 AAA team on Saturday at the Air Force rink. It was the second win in as many games by the same score against a T-Birds team that was much improved over the last meeting between the two teams.

The Jaguars got off to an early lead in the 1st period when Nathan Zavala blasted a shot from the right point that found the left side of the net over the T-Bird goalies blocker. The Jaguars had forced some traffic in front of the net with Nathan getting the pass from Luc Neitenbach for the 1-0 lead.

The Thunderbirds made it 1-1 a little later in the period when they converted on their power play opportunity. The period ended tied at 1 with the T-birds having a somewhat surprising 11-6 advantage in shots over the Jaguars. The T-birds were very good at getting their PP set up and was able to get a number of shots on Chris Manka, but only 1 behind the Jaguar netminder.

The game went back in forth in the 2nd period with the Jaguars getting some real good chances, but the T-birds goaltender showed why he is a AAA goaltender making a number of very good saves. Chris Manka was every bit as good on the other end of the ice and the game remained tied for much of the period.

With a few minutes remaining in the period, the Jaguars executed a perfect 3 on 2 with Trevor Landgraff finishing the play with a terrific wrist shot to the top left corner that caught a little bit of the left post on its way in for the 2-1 lead. Danny Turgeon made the pass that put Trevor in great position at the top of the slot. Shots were 10-8 and again in favor of the T-birds for the 2nd period with Chris Manka having made 20 saves as the Zamboni took its turn on the ice.

The Jaguars came on the ice very loose in the 3rd and had a lot of the confidence back that they seemed to be missing the 2 weeks prior. The Jaguars got two goals in the 3rd period from Tyler Mueller and Danny Turgeon. Tyler’s unassisted shot from the left point deflected off the T-birds defenseman and dropped down into the far right corner of the net. Danny Turgeon finished things off putting home the loose puck after a strong offensive attack with assists from Luc and Nathan to make it 4-1.

Unfortunately, the Jaguars’ Jimmy Maier had to be helped off the ice with an ankle injury after he went hard into the end boards with about 5 minutes to go in the game. The extent of the injury is uncertain, but Jimmy will definitely be missed in the game on Sunday against Arvada.

The Jaguars had a 12-8 advantage in the 3rd and seem to get stronger with each period against the fast and talented, but smaller T-Birds team. The Jaguars look to keep their winning ways going against Arvada at home on Sunday at 5:15 PM.

12/17/2006 - Jaguars Rebound Against Boulder

On Friday night the Jaguars turned a 3-goal 2nd period into an important 4-2 CCYHL win over Boulder to improve to 8-1-1 in league play. The Jaguars had built a 4-0 lead into the third period against the Hwy 36 rival with Boulder getting two late PP goals to make it 4-2. Boulder was fresh off their Silver Stick championship win on Sunday and had been coming on strong in league play, so this would be a big game and ultimately an important win for the Jaguars.

The Jaguars got off to a slow start offensively and managed only a couple of chances in the first period. Kyle Faulkner got things started early in the 2nd at 13:13 with a shot from the left point with the Jaguars having just got a man of the box and started a power play. Kyle’s shot went off the Boulder goaltender’s stick and flipped up and over the goalie and into the net.

Boulder got their best chance of the first 2 periods when they were awarded a penalty shot resulting from a trip as Nathan Zavala reached out to slow down a streaking Boulder attacker. The BVHA player tried to pull Chris to his left and come back to the other side, but Chris got his right leg out to stop the shot and keep the game at 1-0 for the Jags.

A little later in the 2nd Brent Ritter pushed the puck out of the defensive zone up to Luc Neitenbach who found himself in a 2 on 1 with Jimmy Maier. Luc got the puck to Jimmy behind the Boulder defenseman and Jimmy did the rest with a nice move around the Bison goaltender to make it 2-0.

And, with only 29 seconds remaining in the period it was Dustin Simmons finding the back of the net taking passes from Luc and Nathan Zavala for the 3-0 Jaguar lead as the teams went off for the 2nd period break. The Jaguars held a slim 16-12 lead in shots.

In the third period, it was Dustin Simmons again and this time short-handed as he burst in behind the Boulder defense and beat the goalie for the 4-0 lead. Tony Buckley had helped break up the play and got the puck up to Dustin.

The Jaguars took 6 penalties in the 3rd period and with the team seemingly running out of gas Boulder converted on the last two power plays at 2:14 and 1:02 to make the score 4-2. Shots on goal ended up even at 22 and Boulder may have had a few more than that. But, it was the Jaguars who really had the best scoring chances throughout the game with some of their best chances being shots not on goal.

The Jaguars appeared to have much more jump in their play in getting to the puck and the open ice with solid positioning and transition play through the neutral zone. The Jaguars play the Thunderbirds U14 AAA team on Saturday at AFA.

12/14/2006 - Added Game vs Thunderbirds Midget Minor 91 AAA
To all players not playing for Standley Lake High School:

We will be combining our team with the players on the Hyland Hills Midget Major AA team that are not playing for Standley Lake to play as the "Hyland Hills Midget High School" team to play a game against the Thunderbirds Midget Minor 91 AAA team next Thursday, December 21st at 6:15 on the Green Rink. Bring your Hyland game jerseys and socks. There are some duplicate jersey numbers with the Major team so we will have to work that out before then. If you have any questions, please contact Coach Brian.

12/9/2006 - Silver Stick Won't Be Gold, Silver or Bronze
The Jaguars just don't look like the same team that appeared to be hitting top form in Minnesota. We could see it coming with the way the team had been playing over the last couple weeks. And, on Friday afternoon they may hive rock bottom with a 5-1 loss to Littleton that virtually eliminated them from advancing any further in the Silver Stick tournament.

With no disrespect to Littleton, the Jaguars got off a total of 12 shots against a team that they had averaged 5.5 goals and 35 shots in their last two meetings. Perhaps they were on tired legs having played to a 3-3 tie against a tough Phoenix Polar Bears team only 4 hours earlier. But, Littleton played earlier that day as well. The Jaguars simply did not play well as a team in a tournament that they would arguably have been the top seed given their play through mid November.

The Jaguars did manage to pick themselves up on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Front Range to end up on a high note in going 1-1-1 for the weekend.

You have to believe this is a mid-season lull and that the boys will pick things up again and ultimately be peaking by the end of the season. They will have to do that soon with two important league games coming up next weekend against Boulder and Arvada (both home games). If they don't, then the Jags could find themselves in a dangerous position in the CCYHL League where anybody can beat anybody else on any given day and only 4 teams will advance to the State playoffs.

The Jaguars began the weekend with a 3-3 tie against Phoenix. Jimmy Maier, Ted Dutcher and Dustin Simmons got the 3 goals for the Jaguars as they fought back from an early 2-0 deficit. Michael Barber made 14 saves against 15 shots over the last 2 periods including a huge save against a breakaway with only 49 seconds remaining in the game to keep the game tied. The Jaguars opened the game with 18 shots in the 1st period and ended up with 36 overall to 25 for Phoenix.

In the afternoon game against Littleton, the Jaguars gave up an early goal on a breakaway goal after a turnover at their own blue line. The Jaguars managed a few good scoring chances including a couple of uncontested breaks, but the Littleton netminder turned them both away. The Jaguars seemed to be getting caught with too many men up ice or overskated the attacking Hawks resulting in a number of odd man rushes. Two more of these turned into goals for Littleton and halfway through period 2 the Hawks were leading 3-0. The Jaguars managed to get one back and trim the lead to 3-1 before the teams went to the 2nd period break. At this point, the Jags had only 8 shots on net to Littleton's 13.

The team is used to an ice-make break after 2 periods and perhaps it would have made a difference if they had one in this game, but there was no 2nd period ice-make in this tournament. The Jaguars got an early chance to start the 3rd period and you had the feeling if they could have got one early they might have come back to win or tie the game, but Littleton held them off and the it seemed like the Jags never got another chance the rest of the way getting a total of 4 shots in the 3rd. Littleton got an empty net goal at just under 2 minutes and another ugly goal that seemed to sum up the whole game. Shots ended up 19-12 for Littleton. The 19 shots against was probably normal and even the 3 goals in-spite of being the result of turnovers might not normally spell a loss for the Jaguars. The real shocker was the 12 shots on net and only 5-6 real scoring chances for a team that regularly generates 30-40 shots per game.

While the results were different on Saturday given the 2-1 victory, the Jaguars offense still seems to be a little out of sync. The team's overall defense was much improved in a game that had a lot of penalties. The Jaguars two goals from Dustin Simmons and both came with the Jaguars in a 2-man advantage.

The Jaguars had a number of other opportunities, but they just seem a little out of sync in their passing, receiving passes, being in the right place and generally not finding and filling open space with the speed and decisiveness we're used to seeing. And, it's on both ends of the ice. Front Range's lone goal came after the Jaguars missed 2-3 chances to attack the play defensively and gain control of the puck.

The Jaguars will attempt to regroup and get back into their winning ways when the play at home against Boulder on Friday. They travel to the Air Force Academy for a non-league game versus the Thunderbirds Bantam AAA on Saturday before ending the weekend with a game against Arvada at home on Sunday. A winning weekend could be the very prescription for getting the team back on track before taking a Christmas break.

12/6/2006 - Jaguars Split the Weekend
Looking like a team that left something in Minnesota the Jaguars split the weekend getting a 4-2 victory over Front Range on Friday and losing by the same score to suddenly dangerous Arvada on Sunday.

After the weekend at Shattuck it seemed the Jags would come home and take things up a level with in-state play. It’s either a tribute to the very tough Colorado AA hockey league or that the Jags got a little over confident and thought they would only need to put the uniform on to win. Whatever happened, the Jags will need to step it up a level or two if they are going to win Silver Stick this weekend.

On Friday, the Jags were tied 2-2 with Front Range late in the 3rd period with Front Range poised for an upset win when the Jaguars would go a man down at 4:48 of the 3rd. But, the Panthers turned the puck over as they were headed in over the blue line. Dustin Simmons and Danny Turgeon were suddenly in a 2 on 1 break and Danny finished off a well timed pass from Dustin that put the Jags up 3-2. The Jags finished that penalty kill for a surprise turn of events.

The Jags would have no part of making the rest of the game easy though and they went to the penalty box 19 seconds later at 2:19. This time the Panthers called a timeout and almost immediately pulled their goalie for a 6 on 4 advantage as they crossed the center line. A questionable decision given they were already a man up and 31 seconds later at 1:48 Ty Scott made those questions even more prevalent when he put home the nail in the coffin after getting a loose puck and finding himself with a clear view of the open net from his own blue line. The Panthers made it interesting in getting a few more shots including a couple in which Chris Manka had to make some great saves to preserve the 4-2 win.

The Jags got off to an early lead when Dustin Simmons put home a pass from Nathan Zavala to make it 1-0 at 9:00 of period 1. The Jaguars dominated period 1 getting 10 shots on net against 3 for Front Range, but could not extend their lead.

At 13:36 of the second, the Panthers capitalized on one of their 7 power play opportunities to make it 1-1. The Jaguars would answer that goal at 5:36 off a well executed 2 on 1. Luc Neitenbach took a breakout pass from Taylor Cyr and came in on left wing. Taking the defender all the way down low in the left circle Luc got a backhand pass to Joe Grove who was filling in on right wing. Joe got his feet turned for a perfect forehand one timer and the 2-1 lead.

The 2nd period was a little more even with shots being 8-7 in favor of the Jaguars. Front Range’s 2nd period play earned them a goal with only 32 seconds remaining in the period. A breakdown in the left corner and an uncovered man moving in from the left circle put the Panther forward all alone against Chris Manka and just like that it was 2-2 with the Zamboni driver poised to open the doors.

The 2-2 score held up throughout an evenly played 3rd period until Danny T got the shorthanded game winner. The Jags were in the box more than the Panthers in what seemed a little one-sided relative to calls stemming from the new rules interpretation. The Panthers ended up 1 for 7 on their power play and the Jaguars were 0 for 4 as they continue to struggle for consistency in that PP department. Chris Manka made 20 saves against 22 shots for the victory.

On Sunday, the fortunes reversed as Arvada came out and completely dominated the 1st period of play and ultimately outshot the Jaguars 16-2 in getting off to a 2-0 1st period lead. Their first goal came on the 1st shift of the game in a 2 on 1 break that Michael Barber had no chance on. The next goal came at 6:56 with a man wide open 2 feet above the crease and a well placed pass gave him the one-timer that beat Michael. Arvada had the only power play opportunity in the 1st at 9:15, but the Jags killed it off.

The Jaguars woes would continue in the 2nd period as they went to the penalty box 4 times to 2 for Arvada. It was the second Jaguar offense that would lead to an Arvada goal and a 3-0 lead. The Jaguars did pick things up though and at 2:11 they would get a power play goal of their own on their second PP opportunity for the game. A Brent Ritter shot was deflected perfectly off Dustin Simmons upper leg into the net as he moved in for rebound just off the left post. The goal was discussed by the officiating crew as Dustin had clearly moved his body forward in attempt to gain control, but as indicated by our own team ref Fred Faulkner – who had a perfect view - the play was not a kick and thus a legal motion and the refs got it right. The teams headed to the locker room with the score 3-1, but not before the Jaguars would take one more penalty at 1:24 and leave them with another 36 seconds to kill off to start the 3rd. It would be the 5th power play for Arvada to that point to only 2 for Hyland.

The Jags managed to kill the penalty to end the 2nd and start the 3rd, but only seconds later Arvada would get a lucky bounce when an errant shot went off the back of a Hyland defenseman and into the net for a 4-1 Arvada lead at 13:56 of the 3rd. The Jaguars would not quit and at 7:46 Danny Turgeon put home a rebound off a Dustin Simmons shot to make it 4-2 and with plenty of time remaining. Things looked even better when Arvada was whistled for a cross check on the very next faceoff. A Jaguar goal here would get things to within one, but the Jags could not capitalize on the power play and as it expired the Jaguars took the first of 4 consecutive penalties at 5:25, 5:05, 4:29 and coincidental minor at 2:19. The first three resulted in over 3 minutes of penalty kill to include 2 minutes of 5 on 3. While Arvada did not score, the clock ticked down and ultimately ran out on the Jaguars.

Shots were 13-12 in favor of Arvada for the 2nd and 3rd periods in spite of the Jags taking 8 penalties to 5 for Arvada. For the game, Arvada had 8 power play opportunities including 2 minutes of 5-on-3 late in the 3rd and went 1 for 8. The Jaguars were 1 for 4 in their power play chances. Not sure if our guys are just getting caught more often with the new rules interpretation, but it sure seemed like a number of calls were missed on the opposition home teams in these two games over the weekend.

The Jaguars move to 7-1-1 and the 15 points keep them atop of the suddenly interesting CCYHL Minor AA division. Arvada, who had a couple of surprise losses early on looks like a team that will contend at State. With a recent 4-3 win over Arapahoe Navy they move to 6-2-0 for 12 points and with one game in hand are right on the heels of Hyland. Arapahoe Navy is 3-1-1, but with the games they have to play they too will be right there with Hyland and Arvada at the top of the division. It seems that these three teams will finish in the top 4 and there will be a fight for the 4th spot with a number of teams including Front Range showing that they cannot be taken lightly come playoff time.

The Jaguars will have 3 practices this week and then open the Silver Stick tournament against Phoenix Friday morning, who beat the Jags earlier in the season 5-3. The Jaguars will then play Littleton on Friday night followed by Front Range on Saturday. As this past weekend indicated, the Jaguars must come ready to play and play 3 periods and keep the penalties to a minimum if they are going to be playing on Saturday night in the semifinals with a chance to play on Sunday.

12/5/2006 - Practice Change

Please note there has been a change in the practice schedule. Our practice that was originally scheduled for 12/20 from 8:00 to 9:00pm on the red rink has been changed to 12/21 from 8:00 to 9:00pm on the blue rink.

11/20/2006 - Fort William Hands Jaguars a 7-4 Defeat
The game for 3rd place was close for 2 periods and the Jaguars ended up with more shots on goal at 35-28, but a 3.5 minute stretch from 15:13 down to 11:27 in the 3rd did the Jags in as they lose to Fort William Canadians 7-4.

The Canadians got on the board first at 12:49 after the Jags struggled for 3 consecutive shifts to clear their zone. #10 was left all alone on the left post for an easy back door goal and a 1-0 lead. 47 seconds later at 12:02 Dustin Simmons got the Jaguars even when he broke loose in the neutral zone. Coming in on the left wing with Ted Dutcher filling the slot Dustin’s wrist shot over the goalies blocker made it 1-1.

The Jaguars had 4 power play opportunities from 10:31 down to 3:23 including two 30-second chances in 5 on 3, but the FW Canadians defense and goaltending and a little bad luck kept the Jags from scoring. As often happens all of those chances on one end gets the team pressing and at 2:15 the Jags were pressing again and left the center of the ice wide open. A shot wide of the net and the Canadians pass to center ice had them going the other way 2 on 0. Michael Barber was outnumbered and it was 2-1. The period ended at 2-1 and the Jags holding a slim 11-10 lead in shots.

The second period was very evenly played with each team getting 11 shots on goal. The Jaguars got the score even once again at 9:20 when a hard slap shot from Tyler Mueller went off the back of Kevin O’Donnell. Luc Neitenbach was right there on the left side to pick up the loose puck and make the score 2-2.

A little over a minute later the Jags went in the penalty box at 8:18 and the Canadians made good on it with some good puck movement and an open man to make it 3-2.

At 6:13, the Jags went on the power play with a chance to take the lead. But halfway into the PP the faceoff in the offensive zone right circle went forward to the right boards. The Canadians defender beat the Jags to the puck and then found #19 breaking free up the center of the ice. With one defender back, #19 took a slap shot from inside the blue line through the legs of the defender that was either tipped or lost just long enough for Michael to lose it and it was 4-2 Canadians.

The Jags went to the locker room knowing they had missed some good chances to get a lead and also saw the Canadians skill and speed take advantage of some open ice chances.

The Jaguars often come out strong in the 3rd period and the hope was that this would be one of those times where they would get back in the game quick. But, this time it was the other team getting the opportunities and making them count. The Jags got caught up ice and the Canadians were again quick to find an opening…this time the Jags gave up a breakaway that ended up in a penalty shot. On the penalty shot at 15:13 of the 3rd, the Canadians shooter faked right and came back left and his shot barely came in through Michael’s pads to make it 5-2. From there the wheels came off over the next 3.5 minutes. First at 13:24 and again at 11:27 and the Jags were staring up at a 5-goal deficit with the score 7-2.

The Jaguars did not give up though and they kept working and kept coming. At 10:29 Ty Scott put home a power play goal taking passes from Trevor and Joe Grove. Ty was perfectly positioned above the crease for a one-timer. At 1:44 it was Dustin Simmons getting his 2nd goal of the game when he came in on left wing and somehow found an opening from low inside the left circle to make it 7-4.

The Jags may have run out of gas and also had to work through some line changes with Danny T, Jimmy and Nick Sutton sitting out their injuries. They ended up with 35 shots on goal to 28 for the Canadians, but the numbers that counted favored Fort William. The Jags finished 2-2 for the weekend against some real good competition. It should serve as a good warmup for the Silver Stick and to help the Jaguars prepare for what they will see come playoff time.

The Jags are now 13-3-1 overall and will take a short break over Thanksgiving week and return to league action with a game at Front Range on Friday, December 1 followed by Arvada on Sunday, December 3.

The Dallas Stars Major AA beat the Hyland Major AA team in an overtime thriller. With the score tied 3-3 Hyland put on all the pressure in overtime and had two potential game winners go just wide. And about 3 minutes in, Hyland was pressing again when the puck came out to center ice and the Stars were off on a 2 on 1 break that they executed perfectly to win the game 4-3. Hyland Major finished 3-1-0 for the weekend.

11/19/2006 - Jaguars Blank Shattuck 3-0
The Jaguars scored within the first 2 minutes of the game and then took an offensive siesta for 2+ periods, but woke up in the third for 2 more goals on their way to a 3-0 blanking of Shattuck St. Mary’s. Fortunately, the team was playing well defensively and goaltender Michael Barber was wide awake for the whole game as he recorded his third shutout in 8 starts.

The Jaguars got some good offensive pressure in the first couple minutes of the game and Tony Buckley would make it 1-0 at 15:13 when he finished off a strong rush getting assists from Trevor and Danny T.

From 13:09 down to 2:41 the teams would trade penalties with each team going three times including 1 coincidental minor. Each team went 0 for 2 in their respective power play chances with both goalies making some great saves. Shattuck had one of their best chances at the end of the 1st and beginning of the 2nd when the Jags took one penalty with 15 seconds to go in the first and setting up the Sabres to start the second a man up. The Jaguars killed off nearly 1:30 when the Jags were whistled again giving the Sabres a brief 30-second 2-man advantage followed by another 1:30 of 5 on 4. In total, the Jaguars killed off 3:30 of the Sabres power play including the 30 seconds of 5 on 3.

From the 12:46 mark and throughout most of the 2nd period the game was up and down with a few chances traded, but no scoring. Just like the end of the 1st period, the Jaguars would get whistled right at the end of the 2nd period with only17 seconds remaining. The Jags would kill that penalty, but go to the locker room knowing they would start the 3rd a man down. They would also start the 3rd without Danny Turgeon who went into the boards with what turned out to be a bone fracture of his thumb (2-4 weeks).

Just like the start of the 2nd, the Jaguars would kill off the penalty to start the 3rd. It was the Jags 5th penalty kill of the game, but everyone was wondering when the offense would get going. Kevin O’Donnell would answer that question at 13:09. With Danny T out and Jimmy Maier still healing his knee injury, Kevin was lined up with Ted Dutcher and Dustin Simmons. With sustained pressure by all three lines the Jags were starting to wear down the Sabres. Ted, Dustin and Kevin were cycling the puck down low and behind the net. Ted found an opening coming off the boards and through the left circle. Ted’s shot rebounded to the left of the goalie and Kevin was right there and using his body to shield the defender he pulled the puck from just over the goal line and back inside the right post for a 2-0 lead.

The Jaguars kept coming and dominated the offensive play for most of the 3rd. One of the nicest goals of the weekend didn’t count when Dustin Simmons flew across the slot to backhand a rebound to the top of the net, but the ref said, “no goal” when Trevor was pushed into the crease by the Sabres defender. Tyler Mueller would make up for that call at 8:40 when he came in unchecked through the right circle and sniped the top right corner of the goal. That made the score 3-0 and that’s how it would end, but not before the Jaguars had to kill off one more penalty from 4:46 down to 2:46.

Shots were not recorded, but however many the Sabres took it didn’t matter, because none of them got past Michael Barber. The Jaguars were also perfect in the penalty kill department with SSM going 0 for 6. The Sabres never saw the penalty box after the 1st period and the Jags ended up 0 for 2 on their power play chances.

The Jaguars improved to 1-1-0 for the tournament and will play the Fort William (Ont.) Hurricanes on Saturday night at 6:00 PM. As the Jaguar was ending, the Dallas Stars Major AA team was closing out their 4-3 win over Fort William and that would guarantee Dallas a position in the championship game on Sunday and the Jaguars will play for a chance to get to the Bronze medal game.

11/19/2006 - Jaguars Explode for 7-3 Win over Fort William
The Jaguars explode for 7 goals against the Fort William Hurricanes and finish with a 7-3 win over the U17 team from Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada.

It wasn’t pretty with the team from Thunder Bay ultimately going to the box 20 times to include 2, 5-minute Majors and 3 game misconducts. The Jaguars were whistled for 13 penalties, but it was Fort William who seemed to loose control from midway through the second and get real ugly at the end. The referee in charge really struggled and didn’t seem to see the ice – in fact; he missed both Major penalties and relied on his linesman to make the right calls.

But, enough of the ugly and let’s get to the good stuff.

The Jaguars opened the scoring at 13:48 of the first when Nathan Zavala picked up a rebound off a Dustin Simmons shot and from low in the circle beat the goaltender for a 1-0 lead. The Hurricanes got even at 8:44 when #17 went unchecked off the faceoff from his own zone and got by the Jaguar defender. He went coast to coast and beat Chris Manka over his glove for the 1-1 tie.

The Jaguars would go back on top at 4:29 with Tony Buckley finishing off a 2 on 1 break taking a Trevor Landgraf pass on the right wing and finding an open 5-hole for the 2-1 lead. The first period was fairly clean with 3 penalties to Fort William with one being coincidental with the Jaguars. The Jags went 0 for 2 on the PP, but Fort William got whistled with 27 seconds remaining in the period that would put the Jags a man up to start the 2nd.

39 seconds into the 2nd, Fort William was sent to the box again and the Jags found themselves with a 5 on 3 advantage. The Jags would go to work quickly and 22 seconds later it was Nathan Zavala getting his 2nd goal of the game with a hard slap shot from the top of the right circle and just off center of the slot. 51 seconds later and the Jags still one man up; Tony Buckley would get his 2nd goal of the game when he was perfectly positioned off the left post to put home a rebound. Trevor and Ty Scott helped apply the pressure and get the assists that put the Jags up 4-1.

A little over 2 minutes later it was the Hurricanes turn on the power play when the Jags went in for hooking at 12:02. 16 seconds later the Hurricanes made it 4-2 and set off a hurricane that would blow the rest of the game. Coincidental minors were called on Brent and #22 from Fort William and with Brent comfortably seated in the Jaguar box, #22 would go off on his way to the opposite box and again in the box that would result in a 10-minute and Game Misconduct. After everything that went on, the game continued - strangely enough - at 5 on 5. And 38 seconds later at 14:06 the Hurricanes found the back of the net again and suddenly it was a 1 goal game at 4-3.

It was at 10:30 of the 3rd when the Hurricanes took their first 5-minute major with a slash to Trevor’s helmet. This was followed by Hurricane penalties at 9:31 and 8:31 that put the Jaguars in a 5 on 3 power play. At 6:59 it was Daniel Sheehan circling out of the left circle and crossing the top of the slot before slipping down the left side and finding the top left of the net for a 5-3 Jaguar lead. It was the Jaguars 3rd power play goal of the period. 5 more penalties were called with 3 to Fort William and 2 to the Jags and play was mostly special teams for the last 5 minutes of the period with neither team scoring. The 2nd period ended with the Jags leading 5-3 and holding a 31-15 advantage in shots.

For a little over 3 minutes of the 3rd there was some hope for a clean period, but at 13:40 the Hurricanes were whistled for hooking and the 34 seconds later Kevin O’Donnell made it 6 to 3 taking a Ted Dutcher pass and finding the back of the net. From there it was ugly with elbows, punches and just a lot of ugly play from the Hurricanes including their 2nd 5-minute Major when #8 jammed the butt-end of his stick into Tony Buckley’s throat. Again, it was one of the linesman who had to step in and make the call. Fortunately, both Tony and Trevor were fine after the game. At some point, you take only so much and the Jaguars occasionally responded with penalties of their own.

With 15 seconds to go in the game, Ted Dutcher would put the nail in the coffin with an unassisted goal from down low off the right crease. The game ended at 7-3 and the Jaguars getting 43 shots to 25 for the Hurricanes and Chris Manka making 22 saves for the win.

Fortunately, both teams showed good sportsmanship and got to center ice and shake hands.

The Jaguars improved to 2-1-0 for the tournament and will play the winner of the Fort Frances and Fort William Canadians who were playing immediately after (both U17 teams from Canada). With the exception of some of the ugly play in this game, the hockey has been generally good with good speed, passing and physical play. The Jaguars look forward to another good game on Sunday and wish good luck to the Hyland Major AA team who will play the Dallas Stars Major AA for the championship.

11/18/2006 - Dallas Stars U18 AA Edge Jaguars 3-2
In the first game of the Shattuck tournament on Friday night the Jaguars took the ice against the Dallas Stars Major AA (U18 AA). The game was fast, the hitting was hard and the refs called the game closer to the old rules and in the end the Jags played good enough to win and arguably were the better team but came up a little short.

The game was never more than 1 goal difference and the Jags never had a lead. The Jags tied the game twice getting to 1-1 and 2-2, but after Dallas made it 3-2 midway through the 3rd the Jags, in spite of getting 2-3 really good chances, could not get back even. The Dallas Stars goalie made 23 saves on 25 shots and some of the Jags best chances would narrowly miss the net high or wide.

All three Dallas goals came by way of the Power Play and they would get on the board at 12:12 of the first period when #21 slipped in from the left circle with a wrist shot that found a small gap inside the left post above Chris Manka’s blocker.

The Jags were getting good pressure to include one offensive attack where the puck would go just wide left of the net. Penalties were 4-3 in the first with the Jaguars and Stars trading penalty kills the rest of the way. The period ended with the Jaguars having an 8-3 lead in shots on goal.

The Jaguars got even at the 10 minute mark of the 2nd period when continued pressure resulted in a 2-on-1 with Jimmy Maier leading the way on right wing and Dustin headed down the center. The Dallas defenseman had to give Jimmy room in order to keep Dustin in check and Jimmy made them pay with a wrist shot that found the top of the net and make it 1-1. The Jaguars had 3 penalties in the 2nd to 1 for Dallas and Dallas would go ahead on one of those power plays at 6:05. With traffic in front, a slap shot from just inside the right point found its way in the top left. Chris seemed to have a shot at it reaching over with his glove, but couldn’t quite catch up with it. The 2nd period ended at 2-1 and the Jaguars holding an 18-15 advantage in shots.

After the break, the Jaguars came out and with continued pressure ended up drawing even about 3-4 minutes into the period on their lone power play goal. It was Tony Buckley putting home a rebound after a lot of action around the front of the net with Trevor and Ty all there. Tyler Mueller and Nathan Zavala got the assists on the play.

But, with a little over 8 minutes to play Dallas would go back on top with their 3rd power play goal of the game. This time the Jaguars were working to clear the puck and with 3 players in the neutral zone or changing Dallas forced the puck back in against Ted Dutcher as the lone defender against 2 Dallas attackers. A real hard slap shot from the left circle clanked hard on Chris’ stick and some how broke through and slowly found it’s way behind Chris and into the net.

The Jaguars would get their chances including at the very end with the net empty on the other end. Danny Turgeon came down the right side of the slot and his shot with about 20 seconds to go went just wide and high on the left side.

Shots were 25-21 in favor of the Jaguars with the Dallas goalie making 23 saves and getting a few breaks with pucks going just wide or high. Dallas ended up 3 for 7 on the power play and the Jaguars went 1 for 7.

In the other game in the Jaguars bracket, the Fort William Hurricanes beat Shattuck 7-2. The game was close for 2+ periods at 3-1, but Fort William opened it up late. The Jaguars Major AA team won in an overtime shootout by 6-5 against the Fort William Canadians and Fort Frances beat the Chicago Flames 2-0. Of the 8 teams in the tournament only the Jaguars and Shattuck are U16 teams (Shattuck has 1 player at 17). The 3 teams from Canada are all 17 and under (no 18 year olds). Hyland Major, Dallas Major and Chicago are U18 teams.

The Jaguars will play Shattuck at 10:45 am on Saturday and Fort William Hurricanes at 6:00 pm. The Jags need 2 wins on Saturday and for Dallas to drop at-least one game in order to have a chance at the championship game on Sunday.

11/12/2006 - Jaguars Get Narrow 2-1 Win Over Tigers

Colorado Springs has been an up and down team against the rest of the league and they seemed up for the Jaguars on Sunday. In a game that was much closer than expected the Jags got good goaltending, strong team defense and did just enough on offense to beat the Colorado Springs Tigers 2-1 on Sunday.

With the win the Jaguars move to 6-0-1 in league play and coupled with an Arvada 4-3 win over Arapahoe Navy on Saturday, the Jags are starting to put a little gap between themselves and the rest of the league.

The Jaguars got on the board first at 6:14 of the 1st period. Trevor Landgraf and Tony Buckley forced the action in keeping the puck in the zone at the left point. With Tony moving towards the net and Trevor carrying the puck into the left circle, it would be Ty Scott streaking in on the far side and getting a perfect pass from Trevor for the easy redirect and the 1-0 Jaguar lead.

With only 11 seconds remaining and a faceoff at the Tiger blue line it appeared that the period would end 1-0, but the Jags could not control the faceoff and a streaking C.Springs player came in on right wing and his hard slap shot from above the circle found a way past Michael Barber and at 0:04 of the first the game was tied 1-1.

In a game where it seemed a few calls were missed and only 7 penalties in total for the game, each team went 0 for 1 on the power play chance in the 1st. While it seemed the Jags had the better scoring chances, the shots were 11-9 in favor of the Tigers.

In the second period the Jaguars had some offensive play, but their good scoring chances seemed to be a little off timing with indecision on shots and passes. The Tigers got the first two breaks of the period with Jags going to the box at 13:07 and again at 6:45, but the penalty kill was strong. At 3:57 the Jags went on their first and only PP of the 2nd period and they wasted little time. The Jags won the faceoff just outside the blue line and Brent Ritter moved the puck up to Ted Dutcher who found a seam on right wing. Ted’s shot from about 15 feet came off the goalie and Danny Turgeon was right there at the top of the crease to put home the eventual game winner. Shots were 7-6 in favor of the Jaguars in the 2nd and they would take the 2-1 lead into the locker room.

In the 3rd period the Jaguars got some good chances including the only two power plays of the period, but couldn’t find the back of the net. With a little over 3 minutes to go an errant breakout pass resulted in a breakaway chance for the Tigers, but Michael Barber turned it away to preserve the 2-1 lead. A little later, the Jags saw Trevor Landgraf go off and not return on what looked like a knee on knee hit that had no call.

With 1:30 remaining and the faceoff in the Jags zone, the Tigers called a timeout to pull their goalie and set up a play. The Jags won the faceoff and moved the puck out of the zone. Kevin O’Donnell was positioned to put the game away with about 1 minute remaining, but his shot on open net went just wide. With 33 seconds remaining Danny Turgeon had a shot at the open net, but his shot also went wide and resulted in an icing call. The Jags called a timeout of their own and returned with the faceoff to the right of Barber. The Jags won the faceoff and moved the puck out and with 19 seconds to go the Tigers took a penalty and from there the Jags won another faceoff and held the puck for the remaining seconds.

The Jags ended up with 23 shots on net versus 22 for Colorado Springs with Michael Barber made 21 of 22 shots for the win. Scoring chances did seem to favor the Jags, but a number of chances went without a shot on net.

Dustin Simmons missed a couple of shifts in the 2nd with a sore shoulder, but returned in the 3rd. Trevor Landgraf was walking on his own after the game and the knee on knee hit that put him out in the 3rd ended up being a good bruise that he’ll recover from in time for Minnesota next week. While a few players are banged up it appears the team will head to Minnesota with everyone in the lineup except Nick Sutton who will be out another 4-5 weeks with a shoulder injury.

The 11-1-1 Jags head to Minnesota on Thursday and will need everyone as healthy as possible with the competition expected to be the best they will have seen so far this year. The Jags will play the Dallas Stars on Friday, Shattuck St. Mary’s and Fort William (Ontario, CAN) on Saturday. Their win/loss record will determine who they play on Sunday.

11/4/2006 - Jaguars Strong in 7-1 Over NCYH
The Jaguars got 3 goals in each of the first 2 periods and coast to a 7-1 victory over NCYH in a CCYHL League game Friday night.

The Jags skated hard and moved the puck very well and when they are playing this kind of hockey everyone is getting in the game and they are tough to beat. Friday was one of those games with six different goal scores on the first six goals. The Jaguars also had one penalty through the first 2 periods and went 2 for 3 on the power play through those periods and out shot the Kodiaks 20-7.

The Jaguars got into early penalty trouble in the 3rd taking consecutive penalties starting at 14:36 that put them a man down until 10:32. It was during this time that NCYH would get their only real sustained pressure during the game. They were able to set up early and often on their power play and get a number of quality shots on goal, but Chris Manka would have nothing of it and turned away nearly 9 shots through the first 5 minutes of the 3rd.

It was Ty Scott getting things started on the very first shift of the game. Ty took a Trevor Landgraff pass at the top of the crease and buried to the top right of the net for a 1-0 lead at 14:25 of the first. The Jaguars had sustained pressure throughout and at 5:06 it was Danny Turgeon taking passes from Tyler Mueller and Dustin Simmons and moving out from the left corner. His shot from inside the circle found a seam inside the left post for a 2-0 lead. Joe Grove got in the act a few minutes taking a Daniel Sheehan pass at 1:46 and finding the back of the net for a 3-0 Jaguars lead. That's how the 1st period ended with shots 11-3 for Hyland.

The 2nd period was almost a carbon copy of the first. Once again on their first shift of the period it was the line of Trevor, Tony Buckley and Ty lighting the lamp. This time Trevor took a Tony Buckley pass and moved in low from the left circle. Trevor saw his first shot go off the goaltender and drop on the right side and because he kept moving his feet he was in position on the right side for an easy rebound and a 4-0 lead. At just under 11 minutes the Jaguars caught NCYH in a late line change. Nathan Zavala moved the puck up ice to a wide open Kevin O'Donnell. As the sole defender tried to cover Kevin, he made a perfect pass to Ted Dutcher moving all alone over the blue line. Ted took about 3 strides and hit the top right corner for a 5-0 Jaguar lead. At this point all 4 forward lines had contributed at-least 1 goal. At 1:43 Danny Turgeon made a pass to Jimmy Maier at the front of the net and between Jimmy and an unsuspecting NCYH defender the puck would get deflected straight to the back of the net to make it 6-0. Shots for the period favored Hyland at 9-4 and 20-7 for two periods.

After holding back the brief charge by NCYH in the first 4-5 minutes of the 3rd period, the Jaguars returned to form. Danny Turgeon made it 7-0 with a nice

10/29/2006 - Phoenix Ends Jaguars Unbeaten Streak
The Jaguars undefeated season came to an end on Saturday with a 5-3 loss the Phoenix Polar Bears 90 team.

The Jaguars faced their toughest opponent of the season and came up on the short side of a game that had 3 lead changes. It was the Polar Bears' ability to capitalize on 2 third period power plays and a Jaguar momentary let down that would make the difference.

With the score tied 3-3 and the Jaguars in the box for tripping, the Polar Bears' #15 stepped into the slot and fired one off Michael Barber's shoulder at 11:59 of the 3rd period for the eventual game winner. 28 seconds later, the Polar Bears would strike again to make it 5-3 and the Jaguars would not come back.

The Polar Bears opened the scoring 38 seconds into the game. The Jags had won the opening faceoff and moved into the Phoenix zone, but after turning the puck over, Phoenix would come the other way. #28 crossed the slot and using players as a screen he found the back of the net on the Polar Bears first shot of the game.

The Jaguars would get even at 3:48 of the first period when Luc Neitenbach took a breakout pass from Joe Grove and take matters in his own hands. Luc split two defensemen and then beat the Phoenix netminder for the 1-1 tie. The 1st period ended 1-1 with shots even at 9-9.

The Jaguars went 0-5 on the power play in the 1st period and the Polar Bears were 0-2.

The Jaguars would get their first and only lead of the game at 11:21 of the 2nd period. Danny Turgeon put home a rebound after a Jimmy Maier shot and a Dustin Simmons rebound attempt. The Jaguars were getting good pressure in the 2nd and it seemed that they might extend this lead.

With a little over 5-minutes in the 2nd the Jags seemed in great position for a 3rd goal with Tony, Trevor and Ty coming in on an odd-man rush, but with a good defensive play the puck was suddenly headed the other direction and as often happens after an odd-man rush on one end, Phoenix had a 2-1 going the other way. Michael Barber made the first save, but there was nobody there to clear the Phoenix attackers and #48 stuck with the rebound and jammed home the 2-2 equalizer at 4:58.

With about 2 minutes remaining, it appeared that the Jags had gone up 3-2, but a Daniel Sheehan rebound was ruled no goal when the net was dislodged. It was later confirmed by the ref crew after the game that the net was knocked off by Phoenix and the goal should have counted.

Each team had 3 PP opportunities in the 2nd, but neither would capitalize making the Jags 0-8 to that point and Phoenix 0-5. This included a Jaguar PP right at the end of the 2nd. With 35 seconds remaining in the PP the horn sounded, but not before the Jaguars were whistled for tripping. This would put them in the box to start the 3rd period. Shots were 15-12 in favor of the Jags in the 2nd and 24-21 for 2 periods

The 3rd period opened 4-on-4, but Phoenix was back to full strength at 16:25. 1-minute later at 15:24 they would get their first of 2 power play goals in the period to make it 3-2. With the puck seemingly headed out of the zone, it suddenly stopped due to the ice still being a little wet. Phoenix was there to poke the puck down low and the Jaguars were out of position having started out of the zone. Just like that Phoenix had 3 players on top of Michael Barber and it was #48 getting the goal.

The Jaguars were quick to recover from that goal and only 30 seconds later, the line of Grove, Sheehan and Neitenbach would take the draw and force pressure down low. Joe found himself and the puck open off a rebound and he buried the puck to make it 3-3 with Dan and Luc getting the assists.

Play continued to the point when the Jaguars went to the box at 12:40 and the Polar bears turning the next minute of play into the eventual 2 goals that gave them the win.

The Jaguars went to the penalty box a total of 6 times in the 3rd period against 3 for Phoenix. One of these was a coincidental minor so Phoenix was 2-5 on the power play in the 3rd and the Jaguars 0-2. Phoenix was getting set up and getting shots and pressure. They had 17 shots in the 3rd period to 10 for the Jaguars and Phoenix outshot the Jags 38-34 for the game.

The Jaguars were 0-10 on the PP for the game with Phoenix going 2-10 and this was one key difference in the outcome of the game. With their speed and the new rules the Jags are going to draw penalties. Taking advantage of the PP in close games against good teams is something the Jaguars will need to do if they are going to reach the Regional and National tournaments in March.

The good news is that this was a non-league game and the team can take some things away from this one that they can work on going forward.

The Jaguars return to CCYHL action next Friday when they host Fort Collins at 6:45 PM.

10/22/2006 - Jaguars Beat T-Birds U14 AAA 4-1
In a non-league game on Sunday, the Jaguars beat the Thunderbirds Bantam, U14 AAA team by a score of 4-1.

As part of the Hyland Hills support for AAA hockey and the Thunderbirds program, the Minor AA and all other Minor AA teams in Colorado have at-least 2 scheduled games against the Thunderbirds Bantam AAA team. There are no other Bantam AAA teams in Colorado and the Minor AA level is the closest match for them.

It took a while for either team to get any real scoring attack and it was over 8 minutes before the Jaguars would get their first shot on goal.

But with just under 5 minutes to go in the 1st period, the T-birds would get whistled for two penalties at 4:59 and 3:31. At 3:15 and the Jaguars in the 2-man advantage, Brent Ritter was set up by Tony Buckley and Trevor Landgraff at the top of the slot. Brent's hard slap shot found the back of the net over the shoulder of the T-bird goalie for the 1-0 Jaguar lead.

And with a little over a minute remaining at 1:03 Dustin Simmons got off a one-timer from the left of the goalie and in tight. The puck rebounded up in the air and dropped behind the goalie and into the net for the 2-0 Jaguar lead. Danny Turgeon and Jimmy Maier helping to put on the pressure and get the assists.

The 1st period ended at 1-0 and the Jaguars having only 4 shots to 2 for the T-birds.

In the 2nd period, the offense picked up on both sides. 8 different penalties were called in the 2nd with 5 going to the T-birds and 3 on the Jaguars. A lot of special teams hockey and no goals. Both teams had some great chances. On the T-bird side they had a weak side attacker open 2 different times on the power play, but the pass would not connect. The Jaguars had a 2-3 minute stretch of continued pressure with a number of chances where the puck was in the feet, just poked away, saved by the goalie or going just wide. The Jags put 13 shots on net in the 2nd to 9 for the T-birds and the team went to the locker rooms at 2-0 and total shots a 17-11.

In the 3rd period, there were another 10 penalties called with 5 called on both teams. Early on it was the Jaguars going to the box more often and they had at-least one man in the box for 6+ minutes from 14:36 down to 8:08. The T-birds would go in twice during that stretch to include being there at 9:38 when Luc Neitenbach made it 3-0. Joe Grove poked a Tyler Mueller breakout pass up the ice past the T-Birds defender. Luc was streaking up the left boards and caught up with the puck just over the blue line. He was able to turn back under the faceoff dot in front of the defender and as he crossed the crease left to right he found an opening just inside the right post.

The T-birds got on the boards with their only goal at 4:44. The Jaguars went in the box again at 6:37 and with only 7 seconds remaining in the Jaguar penalty, the T-birds got a good attack and a hard shot on net came off of Chris Manka's stick. The Jags couldn't clear and #40 put home the rebound.

The T-birds had been in the box only twice in the 3rd at that point, but would go in 3 times from 4:26 until the end of the game. And on the 2nd of those 3 penalties Ty Scott would cap off the scoring when he put home a rebound from within a big crowd at 1:42. Trevor Landgraff got his second assist of the game on the play and Tony Buckley started things off with a shot that went off the corner of the goal frame where post meets crossbar.

The Jaguars outshot the Thunderbirds 13-5 in the 3rd stanza for a three period total of 30. Chris Manka made 15 saves against 16 shots in notching his 4th win of the season.

The Jaguars move to 9-0-1 overall and play another non-league game on October 28th against a very good Phoenix Polar Bears 90 team.

10/21/2006 - Jaguars Get 3 of 4 Points on the Weekend
With a 5-4 win over Littleton on Sunday and a 2-2 tie against Arapahoe Navy on Saturday, the Jaguars get 3 points in the standings and remain undefeated on the year at 2-0-1 in League and 6-0-1 overall.

While looking real sharp at times, neither game was a thing of beauty. It’s early in the season and the little mistakes are bound to happen, but good teams find a way to come away with the points and that was the case this weekend.

On Saturday, it was an uneventful 1st period on the scoreboard, but eventful for the Jaguars who saw forward Kevin O’Donnell leave the game with what was later determined to be a mild concussion. Kevin went to make a hip check on the end boards, but the Arapahoe player moved in such a way that Kevin went into the boards backwards and his head went back against the glass. The Jaguars already had Tony Buckley getting some down time after his injury in the Boulder game. The Jaguars will be looking forward to getting both players back.

It was Arapahoe getting to the early lead at 14:40 of the second period. After forcing a turnover behind the Jaguar net, #18 for Arapahoe found #5 all alone at the top of the crease. A good pass from behind the net and a bang-bang play that Chris Manka had little chance on.

The Jaguars would get the equalizer at 6:12 of the 2nd period, when Luc Neitenbach forced the action on right wing with Joe Grove filling in the left wing for a 2 on 1. Luc drew the defenseman to the right side and got the puck over to Joe on the left side of the crease. Joe seemed to miss the first swipe, but the puck stayed in position for Joe to get a second chance – and he didn’t miss.

The teams would go to the 2nd period break tied at 1 and shots even at 15 apiece. The Jaguars missed on a couple of breakaway opportunities in the first two periods.

After few penalties being called in the first two periods, the game would change in the first half of the 3rd period. Special teams were in order for most of the 3rd, but neither team could take advantage until the Jaguars went on the 2-man advantage just before the 7-minute mark. The Jaguars got the puck down deep and got the play set up. Daniel Sheehan then found Kyle Faulkner at right wing. Kyle got a hard shot on net that rebounded in front. First Dan, then Joe and finally Luc got the final rebound tap to put the Jags up 2-1.

The Jaguars had a good chance to put the game away as they were still on a 1-man advantage for another 1:15, but Arapahoe did a good job of keeping the Jags from getting set up. The Jaguars would get a couple more breakaway chances in the 3rd, but couldn’t capitalize.

With the game winding down to 5-minutes, 4-minutes, 3-minutes…tick, tick, tick…2-minutes and it seemed the Jaguars would hold on for the win. But, with 1:37 remaining Arapahoe was cheating a forward high in the neutral zone and a long pass from their own end would connect just above the Jaguar blue-line and just behind the Jaguar defense. All alone coming in on right wing, it was #7 from Arapahoe beating Chris Manka on the short side for the 2-2 tie.

Neither team would put together much of a threat the rest of the way and the game ended at 2-2 and Arapahoe having a slight 25-22 advantage in shots. Chris Manka made 23 saves for the win.

On Sunday, the Jaguars came out real fast and controlled the tempo for the first two periods and got out to a 4-1 lead through 2 and had a 28-10 advantage in shots.

Surprisingly, it was the Jaguars in Littleton’s house who would get the early power play chances. At 13:48 Littleton went off for high sticking and Nathan Zavala would cash in 13-seconds later. Taking a pass from Danny Turgeon, Nathan wound up from the top of the right circle and his hard shot hit high off the Hawks netminder and flipped over his shoulder and into the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Hawks would go to the box again at 12:54 and this time it was Taylor Cyr who would make them pay. From the same right point, but a little further away, Taylor knocked down an icing attempt and then found the top of the net for an early 2-0 lead.

The fans could hear Coach Sutton say, “2 goals is nothing boys, let’s keep pressuring them”. The pressure kept coming and at 8:38 of the 1st, Daniel Sheehan came on the ice behind the Littleton defense. Joe Grove got the puck up ice and Dan found himself with nobody but the goalie between him and a goal, but with the LHA defender on his back. The defender hooked Dan, but not enough. With a delayed penalty coming Dan was able to get the puck on his backhand and between the goalies pads for the 3-0 lead.

The second period saw even more pressure from the Jaguars with 18 shots going on net, but few going in. Nathan Zavala got a turnover at the Hawks blue-line and with a nice move to his forehand slid the puck behind a sprawling Hawks goalie for a 4-0 lead. The game seemed to be well in hand for the Jaguars…famous last words.

With continued pressure at just inside 6 minutes the Jaguars seemed like they would make it 5-0 with Dustin, Jimmy and Danny T putting the pressure on. Jimmy’s hard shot came off the Littleton goaltender so hard that it got outside the pressuring Jaguar forwards. A quick pass by the Hawks and they were headed the other way in a 2-on-1 break. It was #4 for Littleton who would get Littleton’s first goal when he came in on right wing all alone against Michael Barber.

The teams would go to the break at 4-1 and shots at 28-10 for the Jaguars. But, only 27 seconds out of the locker room, Littleton would close the gap to 4-2 on a floater from the left point that seemed to have eyes through traffic. Michael got a piece of it, but not enough to keep it from dropping in just inside the far post.

The Jaguars would get that one back about 1 minute later at the 13:31 mark. Dustin Simmons would get a pass from Nick Sutton just above the crease for the 1-timer and the 5-2 Jaguar lead. This was not enough to discourage the Hawks though and the calls or non-calls from the referee also started going the Littleton way. At 10:14, Littleton would get a 2-man advantage and combined with a no call for a man in the crease, the Hawks would get a rebound goal to make the score 5-3.

From there the teams exchanged power play chances over the next 8+ minutes, but no goals were scored. Like the day before, the Jaguars had some very good chances uncontested on the opposing goaltender, but perhaps squeezing the stick a little too tight couldn’t light the lamp and it almost cost them.

With the Jaguars protecting the 2-goal lead they would turn it over in their own end and the Hawks #17 would convert with 50 seconds to go and make things very interesting at 5-4.

Littleton called their timeout and about 15-seconds after play resumed, Ted Dutcher seemed positioned to put things away with an empty-net goal, but a non-call on a clear hook by the LHA defender kept him from getting the clincher. The Jaguars would manage to tie up the puck, the sticks and the players enough to keep Littleton off the board and hang on for the win.

The Jaguars would get only 3 shots on goal in the 3rd period after averaging 14 for the first two periods. Littleton would get 10 shots and 3 goals in the 3rd. This is one of those games where the coach is probably saying, “we played well, but need to play hard all 3 periods”. The Jags have sometimes started slow and finished hard or vice versa and you just know that this Brian Sutton coached team will ultimately put it together for 45-mintues game in and game out.

Next up for the Jaguars is the Arapahoe Maize team…this is Arapahoe’s second AA team, but in this league and at this level no team can be taken lightly. Littleton beat Navy and lost to Maize in the Early-Bird. The Jaguars host Arapahoe Maize on Sunday, October 15 at 3:45 PM.

Later this month, the Jaguars will play D.U. (10/20) for their 5th League game before playing a couple of non-league games against the Thunderbirds Bantam AAA (10/22) and a team from Phoenix (10/28).

10/21/2006 - Jaguars “Gassed” – Win 2-0
After getting complaints from his entire team about headaches, dizziness and upset stomachs, Coach Sutton inquired with the rink. It was confirmed that there was a gas leak that was going directly into the Jaguars locker room.

In spite of this, the boys “sucked it up” and got 2 goals in the 3rd period as they improve to 5-0-0 on the season. Michael Barber stopped 25 shots in earning the Jaguar’s first shutout of the season.

Tony Buckley was taken off on a stretcher with 4:13 to go in the game after going to the ice with a Boulder player engaged and falling on top of Tony’s head and neck. One can only wonder if Tony had some dizziness from the gas that made him more off balance than usual. At the time of this report, Tony was conscious and moving all of his body parts. Doctor’s are taking X-Rays for precautionary measures.

When Tony went off, the Jaguars were holding a slim 1-0 lead, but 31 seconds after play reconvened Jimmy Maier took a Dustin Simmons drop pass and rifled a wrist shot just under the cross bar to make it 2-0…the score that would hold up for another 3:42 seconds.

Earlier in the 3rd, Jimmy Maier took a Tyler Mueller pass and put a hard shot on goal from the top of the slot. The puck caromed out towards the right faceoff dot where Danny Turgeon was perfectly position to put a hard wrist shot between the left pipe and the goaltenders blocker. This was the first goal and eventual game winner.

For 2.5 periods prior, the Jaguars had a number of great chances, but the Boulder netminder kept coming up with save after save. Not to be outdone though, Michael Barber also made some great saves of his own and position his team to eventually win the game.

Every game is an important game at the AA level as only 4 teams will advance from the 10 team division to compete for the State Championship in February. This was a good 2 points to start the season.

The Jaguars will play their home opener and next league game on October 7 at 3:45 PM.

10/21/2006 - Jaguars Too Much For D.U.
The Hyland Hills Jaguars explode for 3 goals in the 3rd Period to cap off a 6-0 victory over a formidable D.U. Jr. Pioneers team.

The line of Dustin Simmons, Danny Turgeon and Jimmy Maier provided all the scoring with each netting 2 goals apiece. Jimmy appeared to have another goal, but the linesman ruled it did not get in under the crossbar. Other Jaguar lines got their chances, but passes just missed, shots just missed or the D.U. goalie made a good save.

Michael Barber was perfect in net getting his 2nd shutout of the season. Michael came up big in the 1st period making save after save as D.U. got the first 5 shots on net for the game with the Jaguars taking an early penalty 43 seconds into the game. A few minutes later the Jags would get a Power Play of their own, but couldn't do anything with it.

The Jaguars would pick things up and start to get into a rhythm midway through period 1. At 7:22 Danny Turgeon got the goal of the night. Tyler Mueller started the play and Kevin O'Donnell made a nice touch pass from the right boards at center ice to catch Danny in stride. From there Danny took matters in his own hands making a couple of great moves using his quick hands and feet to sidestep one defender in the neutral zone and around another in the attack zone before finishing off with a shot into the top corner of the net for a 1-0 Jaguar lead. On a night that was followed by two very good AAA teams, there was no better goal than this one.

The Jaguars would go to the box at 3:25 and kill another D.U. power play. The period ended 1-0 and the shots were even at 9-9 to include D.U. getting 6 of their 9 in the first 2-3 minutes of the game.

The 2nd period started like a carbon copy of the first with the Jaguars going to the penalty box on their first shift of the period again. This time only 36 seconds into the period. D.U. has some good players and got some good PP chances. But, Michael Barber was solid again and kept D.U. off the board.

At 10:06, Dustin Simmons would not give up on a tip and after a couple of whacks put the Jaguars up 2-0. Tyler Mueller got a pass from Luc Neitenbach and put the puck on net and in position for Dustin to his rips.

At 5:31 it was Jimmy Maier's turn as he got just enough of a Taylor Cyr shot to redirect the puck past the surprised D.U. goaltender for the 3-0 lead. Danny Turgeon started the play with a pass to Taylor on the left point.

The Jaguars were back in the box 12 seconds later at 5:19 and then again at 4:34 giving D.U. the 2-man advantage for the next 1:15. But, once again good goaltending along with some good PK kept the visitor side of the scoreboard stuck on zero. The period ended at 3-0 and shots at 21-19 in favor of the Jaguars. The majority of the D.U. shots coming on their power plays.

After the game, Coach Sutton would say that he wasn't happy with the Jaguars play in the first two periods and especially period 1. The 2nd period break gives Coaches the opportunity to "make adjustments" in the locker room and the Jaguars looked like an inspired team in the 3rd period.

The Jaguar pace was fast and the hitting was hard, but for the third period in a row, the Jaguars were first in the box. This time it took more than a minute, but just barely over 2 minutes when they went in at 12:58. D.U. would go to the box 1-minute later and neither team would score as play wound down under the 10-minute mark.

At 9:32 and 22 seconds after the Jaguars PP ended it was Dustin Simmons taking passes from Turgeon and Maier and putting his shot from the top of the right wing circle over the D.U. goaltender for a 4-0 lead. It was a goal that seemed to deflate the D.U. team.

Danny Turgeon would get his 2nd goal of the game at 4:55 tipping home a Kyle Faulker shot with Dustin Simmons getting an assist. At 1:01 Jimmy Maier would cap things off after forcing a turnover from inside the Jaguar D-zone and then beat everyone to the loose puck. Taking it from the neutral zone, Jimmy deeked right and pulled the puck to his backhand that froze the D.U. goalie and left Jimmy with the open net and a 6-0 Jaguar lead.

This came only 2-minutes after Jimmy had seemingly got the 6th goal on a similar play, but his hard forehand wrist shot that seemed to get in just under the crossbar was ruled no goal. A big hit was put on the play that left a D.U. player sprawled face down at the blue line. Not sure who or how, but the D.U. player did eventually get up.

For the game, the Jaguars outshot D.U. by 35-30 in spite of D.U. getting 8 power play chances including a 5-on-3 against the Jaguars 3 PP chances. Given this many chances D.U. showed that they can be dangerous and that's going to be the case for all teams in the CCYHL Minor AA division.

The Jaguars move to 4-0-1 in league and 8-0-1 overall and will need to play with a little more discipline against a very skilled Thunderbirds Bantam AAA team on Sunday.

10/21/2006 - Jaguars Beat Arapahoe 6-1
Hyland Hills got off to a strong start and coasted to a 6-1 victory over Arapahoe Maize on Sunday and improved to 3-0-1 in league and 7-0-1 overall.

The Jaguars set the tone from the very beginning getting 17 shots on goal in the 1st period against 5 for Arapahoe. The Jags only got one goal, but you could sense that it was only a matter of time before they would wear down the team in blue.

Dustin Simmons got the Jaguars on the board at 12:11 of the 1st period when he buried one from the left side after taking passes from Jimmy Maier and Danny Turgeon. The Jaguars put a ton of pressure on throughout the period, but the Arapahoe netminder kept the score close.

In the 2nd period, the Jaguars came out pressing in the offensive zone, but it was Arapahoe getting their only goal of the game at 13:31 after a breakdown resulted in breakaway chance for the Maize.

The Jaguars continued the pressure that resulted in a couple of Arapahoe penalties including a 5-minute major for cross-checking at 10:59. 49 seconds into the power play Ted Dutcher would move in on the left wing after taking passes from Dustin and Tyler Mueller. Teddy put a hard wrist shot over the glove side into the right side of the net for the 2-1 Jaguar lead.

At 8:12 with the 5-minute major still in effect, Arapahoe would go off for slashing. And, a little over a minute later, Trevor Landgraff would put away the loose puck left over from a Ty Scott swat after a Taylor Cyr shot for the 3-1 lead.

Arapahoe continued to chase the Jaguars throughout the 2nd period and at 4:01 they would go to the box again for roughing. At 3:49 Daniel Sheehan would reach around a stretched out goaltender to put back a Kyle Faulkner shot. Joe Grove also assisted on the play that gave the Jags a 4-1 lead.

The Jags were done though and with exactly 2 minutes to go, Danny Turgeon “sniped” the Arapahoe netminder from the right side after taking passes from Dustin and Brent Ritter. The 2nd period would end at 5-1 and the Jaguars holding a 36-8 advantage in shots on goal.

The 3rd period was fairly quick and uneventful, but did have two notable scoring chances. About 1-minute into the 3rd, Nick Sutton was ticketed for a trip on a breakaway chance and given the maximum fine of a penalty shot. Chris Manka would issue a pardon by keeping the Arapahoe shooter from finding the net. The Jaguars would go to the penalty box 3 more times in the period, but special teams and strong goaltending kept the score at 5-1 until 17 seconds remaining. Taylor Cyr came in on the left side and after taking Dan Sheehan and Luc Neitenbach passes Taylor would put his wrist shot off the Arapahoe goaltender and into the right corner to cap off the 6-1 victory.

13 different Jaguars would get at-least one point in the game and Chris Manka was solid behind a strong defensive unit in net stopping 11 of 12 shots for the victory.

The Jaguars host D.U. in a CCYHL league game next Friday, October 20 at 6:30 PM.

10/21/2006 - Early-Bird - Early-Champions!
The Hyland Hills Jaguars Midget Minor AA team beat Arvada 5-3 on Sunday to win the Early-Bird championship.

The team showed their character, heart, perseverance and a positive attitude to overcome an early deficit, Coach Sutton being in the stands and once again having to play a large part of the game short-handed.

In the very first shift of the game, Dustin Simmons was ticketed for a check from behind that carries a 2+10 in the fine department. Arvada was able to push the puck in front of the net and after a short scramble the puck ping-ponged its way across the goal line for an early 1-0 Arvada lead 45 seconds into the game.

The Jaguars would go to the sin-bin two more times in the 1st to one for Arvada, but neither team would capitalize on their power play chances and the period ended at 1-0 Arvada and the Jaguars holding a slim 8-6 lead in shots.

The 2nd period was looking a lot like the day before with special teams being the name of the game, but defense and goaltending was in control until a little over 5 minutes to go in the period. With the Jaguars playing a man down, Nathan Zavala picked up a loose puck at the Arvada blue-line. After working around and between defenders found the top right corner from just off the left faceoff dot for a 1-1 tie.

Trevor Landgraff would give the Jaguars their first lead of the game at 1:29 with the Jaguars on a power play. Trevor started in over the blue line from the right side and found a seem to the goalie. The seem closed, but between Trevor and Kevin O’Donnell one of them got a shot off and Trevor knocked home the rebound on the left side of the crease for the 2-1 Jaguar lead. Nathan Zavala also assisted on the play. The 2nd period would end at 2-1 and the Jaguars having a 17-12 lead in shots.

Arvada would get even at 14:15 of the second period with the first 5-on-5 goal between the two teams after 5 periods of hockey. It was a floater to the top of the net from the top of the left circle that Chris Manka appeared to not see coming. Perhaps, he just wasn’t used to seeing a shot with 10-players on the ice.

That lead would hold until 11:24 when during 4-on-4 paly, Danny Turgeon took a Dustin Simmons pass and wrapped around the net and from just above the end-line found a seem in the Arvada goalies 5-hole.

Arvada would get their 2nd power play goal at 7:14 when the puck squeezed in between Chris’ blocker and the right post and get the game back even at 3-3. This goal had come after the Jaguars had been killing penalties since the 10-minute mark including a 35-second 5-on-3 between 8:45 and 8:10.

At 3:55 the Jaguars would go to the box again with the referee making a delayed penalty call after seemingly seeing nothing except for an Arvada player laying on the ice. Fortunately, the Jaguars penalty killers had become very well experienced this weekend and were able to keep Arvada from getting the lead.

With only 56 seconds remaining, Daniel Sheehan and Luc Neitenbach were headed for a 2-on-1 break when Arvada was whistled for hooking Dan as he came across the blue-line. It appeared the puck was still live giving Luc a clear 1-on-1 with the goalie, but the whistle blew play dead. But, only 26 seconds later, Dustin Simmons would get a perfect pass from Danny Turgeon and from the left of the crease one-time the eventual game winner.

Arvada took an unsportsmanlike on the play leaving them with only 5 skaters with the goalie pulled. After the faceoff, Dustin would eventually gain control and from his own blue-line backhand the puck into the air and over everyone into the empty net for the 5-3 win.

Arvada had 11 shots to Hyland’s 6 in the third and shots ended at 23-23 and the Jaguars getting 12 penalties to Arvada’s 7. Penalties and therefore special teams are clearly going to be something to accept and deal with. This Jaguar team seems to be up to the task.

The Jaguars will open League play against Boulder at BVICE next Saturday at 7:00 PM.

10/21/2006 - Jaguars 4 - Arvada 2: 5-on-5 Goals - 0
We knew it was only a matter of time with the new rules enforcement. We knew there would be more calls for Interference and Hooking. We knew there would be some referees who would enforce the rule interpretation more than others.

What we didn’t know (should have known) is that some referees would call the old rules much tighter. Perhaps it’s an “I have to call things tight” attitude that will have some referees also interpret what we used to know as a check on the puck carrier as a penalty. Whatever the reason, we got our first taste of the 30+ penalty game and Coach Sutton will get his first bleacher seat view of this team.

In the end, the Jaguars weathered the storm for a gutsy 4-2 win over Arvada in game 3 of the Early Bird tournament and will play the same Arvada team on Sunday for the right to lift the iron.

The first period had a few penalties, but not stacked up. In fact, the Jaguars had 3 power play opportunities to only 1 for Arvada. Neither team could produce a goal and the period ended at 0-0 and Arvada holding a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. But, the last 5-minutes of period 1 being a combination of 5-on-4 or 4-on-4 hockey was an indication of what was to come.

In the 2nd period, there was a total of 2:29 played 5-on-5. The rest of the time was 5-on-4, 5-on-3, 4-on-3 and 4-on-4 hockey with the Jaguars being the only team having to kill 5-on-3 (1:09) and 4-on-3 (0:51). Each team had to kill 3:14 and 3:13 respectively of 5-on-4. In total, 8:27 of man advantage hockey was killed off. Oh yeah, 4 goals were scored and they were all scored during the 4:04 of 4-on-4 hockey. (Rick, you can check my math and it adds to 15:00.)

Tyler Mueller got things started for the Jaguars at 12:18 of the second after taking a pass from a hard charging Luc Neitenbach off the left wing. Tyler moved in to beat the lone defender and placed a back hand over the glove side shoulder of the Arvada netminder for the 1-0 lead.

Arvada would get even at 1-1 at 9:51 when the Jaguars had a little confusion in the right corner of their own zone – likely resulting from thinking you have that 5th player on the ice. An errant pass ended up in the slot and Arvada was quick to the puck and beat the unprotected Michael Barber.

But, 53 seconds later – again in 4-on-4 hockey – it was Kevin O’Donnell with a great hustle and hard working goal. After forechecking the puck into the right corner and getting knocked down, Kevin scrambled to his feet and to the front of the net just in time to tip a Kyle Faulkner shot into the back of the net for the 2-1 Jaguar lead.

Did I mention that we’re still playing 4-on-4 hockey...only 39 seconds later at 8:19 the Jaguars couldn’t control a rebound to Michael’s left and once again Arvada was quick to make the Jags pay and it was now a 2-2 hockey game.

The period ended at 2-2 and Arvada holding a 17-12 lead on shots.

I could fill 3 pages with the 3rd period and especially the last 8:23, but I’ll summarize it quickly. In total the Jaguars would kill off 4:55 to 1:48 for Arvada in the 3rd. Another 2:53 was played in 4-on-4, 0:56 of 3-on-3 and 4:28 of 5-on-5 hockey. In the period, the Jaguars spent 3:30 with only 3 players on the ice, 5:22 with 4 players on the ice an 4:28 with 5 on the ice…phew!

Oh yeah, there was some goals scored. The Jaguars would make it 3-2 at 13:33 of the 3rd (surprise- surprise it was during 4-on-4 play) when Dustin Simmons broke free and beat all Arvada defenders before putting a hard wrist shot over the blocker of the Arvada goaltender. Joe Grove would put the nail in the coffin with 1:15 on the clock and the net empty. Technically, this was – believe it or not – a Jaguar power play goal that occurred during a 12 second gap between 1:19 and 1:07 and about 1 minute after the Jaguars had killed off 1:17 of 5-on-3 and 1:09 of 4-on-3 hockey.

Michael Barber had to be spectacular in net and he was up to the task making 26 saves against 28 shots.

Coach Sutton could only say, “It looks like I’ll be drinking coffee and watching with you (parents) tomorrow!” In total 17 penalties against HHHA and 13 against Arvada.

10/21/2006 - Jaguars Open Season With Victory
After 3 weeks of practice and dryland the team came out and showed the promise that we all thought they might have with a 6-3 win over Littleton in Game 1 of the Early Bird Tournament.

It didn’t take long to get on the scoreboard and it was the Jaguar speed and hustle that got them their first goal. With the Jaguars dumping the puck and changing lines, Danny Turgeon beat the Hawks defender to the end boards and after going behind the net he looked up to find Jimmy Maier coming down the slot…pass…shot…goal…1-0 Jaguars.

With the new rules interpretation it was no surprise to hear the referee whistle. The Jaguars were first to go, but Littleton was unable to capitalize. With Littleton going off at 10:08 it was the Jaguars who would get the first power play goal. Brent Ritter took a pass from Jimmy Maier and wound up from the left point. Brent’s hard shot on the ice deflected off the skate of Dustin Simmons and slipped in between the left pipe and the goalies skate for a 2-0 Jaguar lead.

Teams exchanged penalty kills and the 1st period ended with the Jags leading 2-0 and having a slim 6-4 lead in shots.

The second period started off similar to the first. Only 50 seconds in it was Danny Turgeon taking a pass from Nathan Zavala and Dustin Simmons and finding the back of the net. On the same shift and only 32 seconds later it was Danny Turgeon again. This time taking passes from Dustin and Tyler Mueller and from the bottom of the left circle he found an opening in the five hole for a 4-0 Jaguar lead.

Littleton got on the boards with a short-handed goal at 9:39 when an errant Jaguar pass back to the point created a breakaway chance that Hawks captain would make good on. The Jaguars didn’t waste time in getting one back though. A little over 1-minute later, Taylor Cyr found Tony Buckley all alone on the right side of the crease. A perfect pass and Tony made it count. 6 seconds later and directly off a faceoff win by Daniel Sheehan, Joey Grove got enough of a puck seemingly headed for the end line and redirected it into the back of the net for a 6-1 lead.

The 2nd period ended with the Jaguars leading 6-1 on the scoreboard and 20-13 in shots. Michael Barber was solid in net stopping all but 1. With the game seemingly in hand the 3rd period went back and forth with a number of power play chances on both sides until Littleton got a couple of late goals at 5:45 and 2:58 to round out the scoring at 6-3. The Jaguars outshot the Hawks 31-19 for the game and Michael Barber and the Jaguars got their first win of the new season.

The Jaguars will play Colorado Hockey Club on Friday at 10:00 am.

10/21/2006 - Jaguars Get 6-1 Win over CHC
They didn’t start with the same speed as game 1, but the end result was the same when the Jaguars beat Colorado Hockey Club by 6-1 in the second game of the Early Bird Tournament.

Perhaps it was the early start after a late game, but the Jaguars took a full period to really get going in this one. Neither team was able to get much on the opposing goalie in the first period with CHC holding a slim 3-2 advantage in shots on goal.

The Jaguars came out fast in the 2nd period though. 59 seconds into the 2nd period and the Jaguars in their first 5-on-3 power play it was Nathan Zavala slipping in from his right point and from just off the slot, he took passes from Dustin Simmons and Brent Ritter and found the far post for a 1-0 Jaguar lead.

The Jaguars 2nd goal would be their first short-handed goal of the season. Jimmy Maier jumped on the ice and picked up a loose puck after a well timed Jaguar check of the CHC defender trying to break out. Jimmy came in unchecked and with a nice move to his backhand side, he flipped the puck over the netminders blocker into the back of the net for the 2-0 Jaguar lead.

With the horn about to sound on the 2nd period, Danny Turgeon would send the CHC team to the bench mumbling under their helmets. Danny found an open 5-hole with only 7 seconds remaining on the clock. Kyle Faulkner and Dustin Simmons provided the helpers.

The 3rd period was a near carbon copy of the second with exception of a rare lapse in the Jags own end. At 12:12 CHC would get their only goal of the game when the puck dropped in behind Chris Manka after it appeared he had it gathered up. Give the CHC attacker credit though as he used the Jag defender to screen Chris on the shot.

For the Jaguars in the third, it was Danny Turgeon getting his second of the game at 11:54 and only 16 seconds after CHC thought they might climb back into the game. Dustin Simmons and Nick Sutton assisted on the goal. The game stayed at 4-1 until 1:33 remaining when Ty Scott ripped a slap shot from just inside the right circle that found the far post for the 5-1 lead. Tony Buckley assisted on the play. And, just like the way they ended the 2nd period, the Jaguars would get one more with only 2 seconds remaining. This time Dustin Simmons got the one-timer from Danny Turgeon just above the crease on the left side to round out the scoring at 6-1.

Shots were 25-17 in favor of the Jags, although Jag stat-man Tom Manka had the Jags with 35 indicating a number of second chance taps that were easier to spot from a high angle view. Important, because it shows the Jaguars attacking the net with a number of players whenever the puck would go on net.

Chris Manka made 16 of 17 saves for his first win of the season. The defensive unit was solid.

The Jaguars will play Arvada on Saturday at 8:30 AM.
