3/30/2010 - U 17 Boys win the Nike Academy College Showcase!
The U 17 Vardar Boys were the Champions of the Mens U 18 Division of the 2010 Nike Academy College Showcase. The boys won all 3 games, racking up 8 goals while giving up only 1. Vardar beat the Eden Prairie SC Dynasty Eagles from Minnesota 4 to 1 in the first game. Notching the first goal was Center Midfielder James Davis, assisted by Forward Eddie Nassar. Center Defender Nick Zingas anchored the defense, with Outside Backs Alex Czirmer and Sean Deters keeping possession of the ball on Vardar feet for the majority of the contest. The second goal was scored by Outside Midfielder Tyler Stephens, assisted by James Davis. Before the half was out, Forward Nick Habuda buried a cross from Tyler Stephens. The final goal went to Eddie Nassar on a great forward pass by Outside Midfielder Carter Brochu. Goal Keeper Michael Mendola made 7 saves, yielding only 1 goal. In the second game, Vardar faced the U 18 Chicago Sockers and won a 2 to 0 victory. With the score tied at the half, the boys came out firing. Vardar Outside Midfielder David Shipper put a free kick in front of the goal for Center Midfielder James Davis to head flick to Forward Eddie Nassars feet. Eddie made no mistake, burying the ball in the back of the net. Later in the half, James Davis laid off a pass to David Shipper to one time past the goalie. Chris Stewart repelled 3 shots on goal to cruise to a shut out over the Sockers. In the third game, Vardar faced the St. Croix SC Celtic from Minnesota. The games was 0 to 0, with the St. Croix goal keeper making some great point blanks saves to keep them in the game. Center Back Brad Henry was all over the field, marking up strong and winning the ball from the Socker players. Finally, after the St. Croix goalie had made 12 saves, Right Defensive Back Sean Deters bent a free kick like David Beckham into the top left corner of the goal, getting his first unassisted goal of the tournament. The second goal came 10 minutes later, when the dogged determination of Outside Midfielder Bryant White paid off handsomely when his pass to Forward Nick Habuda was banged home. Goal Keeper Michael Mendola made all 5 saves to preserve a shut out for the team. Good job, boys!
